Many studies show that hand sanitizer gel work well in clinical settings like hospitals, where hands come into contact with germs but generally are not heavily soiled or greasy (1). Some data also shows that hand sanitizers may work well against certain types of germs on slightly soiled hands (2,3.) However, hands may become very greasy or soiled in community settings, such as after people handle food, play sports, cooking, or cutting a hair or after massaging. When hands are heavily soiled or greasy, hand sanitizer gel may not work well (4,5,1). Handwashing with soap and water is recommended in such circumstances or a sanitizing wipes as the wipes material is able to remove heavily soiled or greasy hands. Why Is 70% the Most Effective Concentration of Isopropyl Alcohol for Disinfection? Studies have shown that Isopropyl alcohol, particularly in solutions between 60% to 90% alcohol with 10 – 40% purified water, is rapidly antimicrobial against various bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Solutions > 91% IPA do kill bacteria, but sometimes require longer contact times for disinfection, and enable spores to lie in a dormant state without being killed. In this analysis, a 50% isopropyl alcohol solution kills Staphylococcus Aureus in less than 10 seconds, yet a 90% solution with a contact time of over two hours is ineffective. CDC recommends using greater than 60% ethanol or 70% isopropyl alcohol in healthcare settings. (6). |
